The Web now has a plethora to tools that can be used for educational purposes, communication, community building, presentations, demonstrations, illustrations, etc. Which tools you use is dependent upon what you want to accomplish.
To Communicate ideas use Blogs, Video Blogs (e.g a YouTube Video), Presentation Software or Share Documents.
To create a personal online presence, add an image of yourself to a Blog - or create your own personal Avatar that speaks on your behalf! (e.g see this one by a library colleague who used Xtranormal.)
To get Feedback to Ideas, use Online Polling, Online Quizzes, and Feedback (Backchannel) tools. Several sites - such as Blogs also can be set up to enable comments.
To Collaborate regardless of location use Wikis, Online Collaboration Tools, Google Documents, Videoconferencing or Social Networking Tools.
To Create a Community for people wanting to discuss issues they are interested in, use Social Networking Tools, Wikis, Videoconferencing, or Blogs that one or more author can contribute articles to - and people can provide feedback to.
The number of useful tools is "virtually" mind boggling.
To find out more, a great resource is **Tech Toys for Faculty**. Do not let the name intimidate you. These tools can be use by anyone - no PhD is required! The site was created by a Librarian (Beth Lander) who wanted Faculty to know about all kinds of tools that they can use for educational purposes - but their usefulness expands way beyond the field of education. Check out **Tech Toys for Faculty** and try out any number of useful resources - based upon your need.
To learn more about how to use these tools check out any help or instructional videos at each site. Most are easy.
To learn how to embed a video into as site - such as a Blog - check out How to Embed or Stream Videos from my Resource Guide for Faculty.
